Release your creativity and let this Aboriginal masterpiece become the conversational piece that breathes life into your surroundings! David Dalaithngu Gulpilil AM (1 July 1953 – 29 November 2021) was an extraordinary Australian actor and dancer, known for his iconic roles in films like Walkabout (1971), Storm Boy (1976), The Last Wave (1977), Crocodile Dundee (1986), Rabbit-Proof Fence, The Tracker (both 2002), and Australia (2008).
I had the privilege of meeting David at Brisbane Airport during a delayed flight. While sketching and doodling, he approached me, intrigued by my drawings. When I mentioned working on a family portrait, he appreciated my art and casually suggested, "One day, you may like to sketch my portrait." I laughed, expressing my eagerness to do so.
Hailing from Arnhem Land, David was an Indigenous Australian and Yolŋu person, raised in a traditional lifestyle. Renowned for his dance skills, he caught the eye of filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who cast him in his debut feature film, Walkabout. Beyond the screen, David also graced the stage with his presence.
Recognized as one of Australia's greatest actors and a pioneer for Indigenous representation in film, David received numerous awards, including a lifetime achievement honour at the 2019 NAIDOC Awards. Following his passing in November 2021, his family requested he be posthumously referred to as David Dalaithngu, respecting Indigenous practices that avoid naming the deceased. This portrait is my tribute to the legacy of this remarkable artist and cultural trailblazer.
